About katherine
Katherine Wynn is a professional cellist based in Chicago. Combining two decades of dedicated training with a love for performing in diverse musical settings from baroque ensembles to contemporary metal on her electric cello, Katherine is an eclectic and flexible player prepared to adapt to any style of repertoire and performance setting. Her dedication and enthusiasm stem from her love for her instrument and its capacity for extreme expressive and stylistic nuance.
Though Katherine originally began studying the piano at age four, she quickly pivoted to the cello after being exposed to the instrument’s timbral similarity to the human voice. Born and raised in Whitesboro, New York, she received a Bachelor's degree in Cello Performance from the State University of New York at Fredonia and was a recipient of the Sid Olshein Scholarship for an Outstanding String Player upon her graduation in 2024.
It was during her five years at Fredonia that her love for ensemble playing and artistic collaboration came to fruition. In 2022, Katherine founded the New Rose Quartet in collaboration with three close friends, a string quartet dedicated to bringing fresh and imaginative interpretations of romantic and contemporary works to the Western New York area.
Also during this time, Katherine began getting involved in the world of experimental composition, as well as the local rock scene as an electric cellist. She was a primary member of the WNY-based indie band HitGRL, and holds recording credits as a studio musician on numerous singles, film scores, and albums.
In 2024, Katherine moved to Chicago to pursue her Masters in Musicology at Northwestern University. Throughout the two year program, she remained an active performer, taking part in numerous recitals, chamber ensembles, and opera orchestras both within the University and across the greater Chicago area. Whether it be the refined elegance of the classical style, the animated grooves of R&B, or the heartfelt expression of contemporary love songs, she is capable of adapting to any musical style that best suits a couple’s vision.
After finishing her Masters in June of 2026, Katherine is now currently based in Chicago full-time as a teacher and studio musician. She has performed throughout the city and its surrounding suburbs, and is more than willing to travel throughout the Midwest. As a collaborative artist with Mose Music & Events, she is thrilled to be part of a roster of professional musicians dedicated to creating exceptional live music experiences for weddings and special events.
